System Shock 2 Information

Here are some updates for System Shock 2:

System Shock 2 Official Patch:

The latest patch (Version 2.3) adds multiplayer mode plus fixes many bugs. If you already have the multiplayer option on your main menu then you most likely have the latest version of this game so you do not need this file.

System Shock 2 Windows 2000/XP/Vista Patch:

This patch enables the game to work to work on Windows 2000/XP/Vista. If you do not have the latest version of the game (Version 2.3) then first install the official patch (see above). Once you have done this then download this patch and copy the SHOCK2.EXE into your system shock 2 folder (usually called Sshock2) and replace the shock2.exe that is in there. If the game does not work once you install the patches then go to the section lower down called System Shock 2 Problems.

System Shock 2 Problems:

If you are having problems running System Shock 2 on Windows XP or Vista and you have already patched it with the patches above then please try the following:

Program Compatibility Mode

Please check to ensure the Program Compatibility Mode is NOT set on the system shock icon you use to start the game:

1. Right Click on the System Shock 2 Icon amd select Properties.
2. Select Compatibility
3. Make sure none of the boxes are checked (or ticked), if they are then uncheck them, select Apply then OK.

Textures

1. Go to your system shock folder (usually called Sshock2)
2. Find the shock.cfg file. Open it with notepad, and add the text:

safe_texture_manager

This needs to be on a line of it's own so probably down the bottom of the rest of the text would be good

3. Then click where it says File and select save.

Hyperthreading

If your CPU has hyperthreading (or a dual core processor) then please do the following:

1. Launch the game, and before starting the game (in the main menu) hit the Ctrl+Alt+Del Keys on your keyboard (all at once) to access the Windows Task Manager.
2. Select Applications
3. Right click on System Shock 2 and select Go To Process
4. Right click on the shock2.exe and select Set Affinity (if your computer is not dual core it will not be there).
5. Uncheck one of the CPU boxes so you only have one CPU running System Shock 2, click OK and go back to the game.

If you have a dual core CPU then you will have to do this process every time you play the game. Unfortunately System Shock 2 does not run well with dual core CPU's.

Windows Vista Administrator Privileges

Sometimes programs on Windows Vista are required to be run with Administrator Privileges.

To do this:

1. Right Click on the System Shock 2 Icon amd select Properties.
2. Select Compatibility
3. Under the heading 'privilege level', tick 'run this program as an administrator', select Apply then OK.
