Windows 2000/ME/XP/Vista Patch / Update Information
Magic the Gathering Duels of the Planewalkers will work on Windows 2000/ME/XP/Vista. Please follow the instructions below to Install and Patch the game:
Put the CD in your Drive and it will Autorun, once it does, click Install. If the Autorun feature has been disabled on your computer you can install the game manually by doing the following:
1. Go to My Computer
2. Select your D: drive (or cd-rom drive), Right Click and select Open.
3. Open the Setup Folder and Double-Click on the Setup Icon.
4. Follow the install instructions.
If you have any problems installing the game (for instance it may say it is only for Windows 95) then use the Program Compatibility on the Setup Icon as follows:
1. Go to My Computer
2. Select your D: drive (or cd-rom drive), Right Click and select Open.
3. Open the Setup Folder and Right-Click on the Setup Icon.
4. Click on Properties.
5. Click on the Compatibility tab.
6. Click on Run this program in compatibility mode and select:
• Windows 95
7. Click Apply, and then click OK.
8. Double click on the Setup Icon to install the game.
9. Follow the install instructions.
a. Once the game has been installed, download the Windows 2000/ME/XP/Vista 32 Bit Patch / Update by clicking the link below:
Save the Patch to your Desktop.
b.
Right Click on the Downloaded File (manalink132.zip) and select Extract Files (You will need a Program such as Winzip installed on your Computer to do this).
c.
Once the files have been Extracted, Open the Manalink folder and click on the Setup application file (gray computer icon).
d.
Follow the Patch / Update setup instructions. Once the Patch / Update is installed, click on the Program Icon in your Program Menu to Play the game.
This updates the game to Version 2.0. This is a large 45MB download but worthwhile because the game runs smoother and more cards have been added. Please ensure you have updated to the Version 1.32 Patch / Update first (except Vista 64 bit users), then try the game and then add the Version 2.0 Update. The link for the update is below:
click here to download the Version 2.0 Update!
Once you download the file then unzip the contents and copy them into your C:\Magic\Program folder (this is assuming you installed on drive C:). When it prompts to overwrite files then click 'yes'.
Latest Update Version 2.01
This updates the game to Version 2.01. You can either download this instead of the Version 2.0 Update above or if you have it already then you can update the game from Version 2.0 to 2.01. Again this is a large 45MB download. The link for this update is below:
click here to download the 2.01 Update!
Once you download the file then unzip the contents and copy them into your C:\Magic\Program folder (this is assuming you installed on drive C:). When it prompts to overwrite files then click 'yes'.

Program Compatibility Mode
If you tried this game previously without the patch then you may have set the Program Compatibility Mode on the icon you use to start the game. If you did this then the game will NOT work once you patch it and it will come up with an error similar to the following:
"Assertion Error File-> D:\Newmagic\multiplayer\sid\glue.c, Line-> 864 Could Not Load Dave's Extra Cool Timer
Please call MPS Costumer Support 1-510-522-1164"
To disable the compatibility mode, please do the following:
1. Right Click on the icon you use to start the game and select Properties
2. Select Compatibility
3. Make sure none of the boxes are checked, if they are then uncheck them, then click Apply, then OK and try the game.
Clean Installation
If you encounter any problems installing or playing the game then a clean installation will need to be made. This means that all previous versions of Magic the Gathering will need to be removed from your computer and also Duels of the Planeswalkers will need to be un-installed. You can then restart your computer. Once it is restarted then turn off all background applications such as firewalls, virus checkers etc...You can then re-install the game.
Nvidia Nview (or Similar Graphic Card Management Programs)
This will need to be disabled if you have it on your computer because it will stop certain elements within the game working correctly such as the Deck Builder. To check if you have nview enabled then right click on your desktop then click nView properties and under the section nView Desktop Manager click the Disable button. You can also find the Nvidia nView Desktop Manager in your Control panel.
In theory, similar programs by other graphic card manufacturers could also cause the same problem so please disable them.
Active Desktop
Similar to the problem mentioned above, Duels of the Planewalkers will work better with Active Desktop disabled.
To disable active desktop, please do the following:
1. Open the Control Panel.
2. Open Display Properties.
3. Click the Desktop tab.
4. Click the Customize Desktop button.
5. Click the Web tab in the Desktop Items window.
6. To disable Active Desktop, make sure all checkboxes in this window are un-checked.
Background Programs
Similar again to the problems mentioned above. ANY program running in the background could potentially stop certain features of this game from working. Some of the culprits have been an interactive mouse and a Qwest internet program. Best advice....turn all unneccesary background programs OFF. This does not apply to this game but any game - why have things running you might not need? To check what is running use your Task Manager. To start this press the alt-ctrl-del keys all at once.
Windows Vista Administrator Privileges
Sometimes programs on Windows Vista are required to be run with Administrator Privileges.
To do this:
1. Right Click on the icon you use to start the game and select Properties.
2. Select Compatibility
3. Under the heading 'privilege level', tick 'run this program as an administrator',
select Apply then OK.
Windows Firewall Exceptions
Please ensure that your Windows Firewall is not blocking certain features of this game. To check this, go to your Windows Control Panel, click Windows Firewall, click Exceptions. Make sure manalink is showing and that the box next to it is ticked.
World of Shandalar - Buying Cards
If there is no Yes or No prompt when you try to buy cards then click the card and press Y on your keyboard. The card will disappear and go into your inventory. You can only buy cards you have enough money for.
